You wanted to die
You wanted to fly
Away from the pain
Away from this life
You couldn’t eat
You couldn’t sleep
They thought it a phase
They thought it would cease
There’s another way you’ll see
To end this life of misery
Ask for help and you will find
Ways to change your thoughts and mind
If your sad today take heart
It’s just a thought that will depart
Thoughts they come and go you know
Pay no heed and let them go (away)
You wanted to die
You wanted to fly
Away from the pain
Away from this life
You couldn’t eat
You couldn’t sleep
They thought it a phase
They thought it would cease
It’s now too late to tell you
You gave up on life too soon
You had so much to live for
But all this you did ignore
You forgot all the beauty
That is yours for all eternity
You didn’t know that peace
Can be had on a long lease
You wanted to die
You wanted to fly
Away from the pain
Away from this life
You couldn’t eat
You couldn’t sleep
They thought it a phase
They thought it would cease
Choose life
And end this fight
Choose life it’ll be alright
It’ll be alright
Choose life
And end this fight
Choose life it’ll be alright
It’ll be alright
Change your mind
And you will find
A reason to live
A reason to shine
Love yourself
And everyone else
See the dark fade
Have wisdom have wealth
The song Choose Life was inspired by the founder of the charity Papyrus, after hearing him tell his tragic story on BBC radio some months ago. There are indeed many tragic stories out there, we hear them everyday and for me the catalyst for creating the song was the knowledge gleaned from the interview not only of the existence of internet suicide chat rooms but more importantly that they claim to have a policy of not interfering if someone has decided to take their own life, even when they would have the means at their disposal to prevent the suicide. Such non-action surely cannot be condoned. After all, many suicides are preventable, depths of despair cannot be continuous, for the transient nature of life demands that everything changes. This is what the song hopes to portray. There is always a way to replacing a bleak black cloud covered horizon with one of light, pink fluffy clouds. You just need to find it. And the looking for it can often be the raison d’être to someone’s life.
