It was just before dawn as Cat set out on his walk. Through the cat-flap he went, and along the garden path, jumping the wall at the end of the garden with a breathtaking athletic prowess that was rarely noticed. Half way along the street was a tree, in which sat Bird. Cat and Bird were old-time adversaries. Neither of them knew why. That was just the way it was. But this early in the day, Cat tended to leave Bird alone. There were more important things to do.
As he passed the tree, Cat heard Bird let out a burst of song. He had heard the humans talking about how beautiful this was, but frankly did not agree. It just sounded like noise to him.
"What are you doing, Bird?" said Cat with a slightly mocking tone.
"I am singing my song," Bird replied.
"What for?"
"It makes the sun come up," answered Bird.
"Ha ha! What?" Cat's mocking tone became harsher. "It makes the sun come up? Are you serious?"
"Of course. How else do you think the sun comes up?"
"I can assure you, Bird," said Cat, "that the sun will come up whether or not you sing your song. Just give it a miss one day and you'll see."
Bird looked sideways at Cat, considering his proposition for a brief second, then dismissed it as ridiculous. He continued to sing his song.
Shaking his head, Cat moved on, reaching the village green. In the centre of the green was a pond, and on the bank of the pond sat Frog. As Cat approached the green, he heard Frog let out a loud, guttural croak.
"What are you doing, Frog?" said Cat with a slightly mocking tone.
"I am croaking my croak," Frog replied.
"What for?"
"It makes the sun come up," answered Frog.
"Ha ha! What?" Cat's mocking tone became harsher. "It makes the sun come up? Are you serious?"
"Of course. How else do you think the sun comes up?"
"I can assure you, Frog," said Cat, "that the sun will come up whether or not you croak your croak. Just give it a miss one day and you'll see."
Frog looked sideways at Cat, considering his proposition for a brief second, then dismissed it as ridiculous. He continued to croak his croak.
Shaking his head, Cat moved on, reaching the farm. Near the entrance to the farm were the bee hives. As Cat approached the hives, he heard The Bees buzzing intensely.
"What are you doing, Bees?" said Cat with a slightly mocking tone.
"We are buzzing our buzz!" The Bees replied in unison.
"What for?"
"It makes the sun come up," answered The Bees.
"Ha ha! What?" Cat's mocking tone became harsher. "It makes the sun come up? Are you serious?"
"Of course. How else do you think the sun comes up?"
"I can assure you, Bees," said Cat, "that the sun will come up whether or not you buzz your buzz. Just give it a miss one day and you'll see."
All of The Bees looked sideways at Cat, considering his proposition for a brief second, then they dismissed it as ridiculous. The Bees continued to buzz their buzz.
Eventually Cat reached his destination, the barn. With more astonishingly adept athleticism, Cat made his way in a series of leaps, bounds and balancing manoeuvres onto the roof of the barn. There he sat and settled himself. With his eyes focused intently on the barely discernable horizon, Cat began to mew his meow.
A few moments later, Cat's concentration was disturbed by a presence beside him.
"What are you doing, Cat?" said Cockerel with a slightly mocking tone.
"I am mewing my meow!" Cat replied.
"What for?"
"It makes the sun come up," answered Cat.
"Ha ha! What?" Cockerel's mocking tone became harsher. "It makes the sun come up? Are you serious?"
"Of course. How else do you think the sun comes up?"
"I can assure you, Cat," said Cockerel, "that the sun will come up whether or not you mew your meow. Just give it a miss one day and you'll see."
Cat looked sideways at Cockerel, considering his proposition for a brief second, then dismissed it as ridiculous. He continued to mew his meow.
Back in the house, the still half asleep humans heard a familiar sound in the distance.
"Cock-a-doodle-doooooo!"
