"You are the Universe temporarily expressing itself as a human life," she said, with a look in her eyes that reminded me of my friends who smoked a lot of pot.
"Am I? Suppose I take that on trust for a short while. So what? What difference does that make to anything?"
"Can't you see how amazing that is?"
"No, not really. What is amazing about it? It is no more or less amazing than being informed that I am a bit of grass that is being temporarily expressed by this football pitch or I am a pat that is being temporarily expressed by this cow's arse. It doesn't make any difference to anything. I am this small thing or I am this big thing pretending to be this small thing for a while or whatever else. So what?"
"Can't you see? You are the whole universe and the whole universe is you."
"No, I can't see, but even if I take your word for it, so what? How is being a universe any more or less remarkable than being a human body? It makes no difference. Just the same identity shifted to another level. What about it?"
"Don't you see? You are The Universe, you are, in effect, God."
"So what? I am this small thing, I am this massive thing, I am this vulnerable thing, I am this invulnerable thing .... so what?"
"Would you not rather be invulnerable, fearless, all-powerful ... than vulnerable and fearful?"
"Mmmm, maybe for a short while, but it would soon become totally shit-boring, a bit like when you cheat on a computer game."
"I feel sorry for you."
"No you don't. You feel sorry for you, because your shiny shiny New Age bollocks isn't being hailed as amazing and wonderful. Never mind, plenty more fish being expressed temporarily by the Universe in the sea."
