Sometimes I wonder whether we've all watched just a few too many soap operas. How many love stories do you know, which have turned somewhere along the way into melodramas? Rage, Power plays, deceit, guilt.. work beautifully on the TV screen but not as well in the context of creating peaceful, nurturing relationships.
For many, relationships are the primary source of 'drama' in our lives. Some of us wouldn't have it any other way! For some it is the dramatic plot lines and scene changes which add excitement and 'spice' to their days.
I have no argument with this attitude, save that in my experience, the more I engage in the 'dramatics' of a relationship, the more distracted I become from loving.
Unconditional Love is infinitely simple. Its entire existence revolves around intimacy. It is sufficient unto itself and as a consequence engenders a deep humility, asking and expecting nothing in return for the gifts it gives. In this way it is very much like Hafiz's sun which " even after all this time... never says to the earth "You owe me". "
Can a wounded, imperfect human being, with all the requisite emotional and spiritual baggage, ever aspire to love in such a profoundly beautiful way?
Perhaps removing ourselves from some of 'the drama' of our lives, and anchoring ourselves in humility is a good place to start.
Perhaps today we will love for the sake of loving. Shine for the sake of shining....
As Hafiz went on to say "Look what happens with a love like that.... It lights the whole sky.".
