[The following word concerto was kindly shared with us by Happy Cow's good friend Simon Drew. When he is not busy gluing letters together, Simon can be found standing on one leg (he doesn't mind whose leg), running long distances in support of short distances, wondering whether those curtains go with that wallpaper and running the online groups English Stuff and International Monthly Hatstand Day. One day we had all had it
we were sick of smiles
Sick of hats at a slant
We decided that we all needed our own table
somewhere we could all sit
and keep talking till we answered all the questions
Ideas were flung back and forth
and little partnerships of whispers developed
and one of us never agreed
but that was good
we needed that kind of security
But one day one of us went all still
his eyes were looking at things
none of us could see
We gave him a knock to wake him
A moment later he was back with us
We kept on talking at that table
for the rest of our lives
We didn't answer any questions
but we all had a day
when everything grew quiet
the someone would wake us
We'd join back in pretty soon
but things after that were different
and it didn't seem to matter what we were saying
all that mattered
was that we were looking
and the table was never empty
after we were gone.
