[The following flash in the cosmic pan has been kindly shared with us by Happy Cow's good friend Simon Drew. When he is not busy severing ties, Simon can be found chopping up cravats, dissecting neckerchiefs, unpicking scarves and running the online groups English Stuff and H.A.T.S.T.A.N.D.(O.N.). You can also find his ramarkable visio-craft in the Happy Cow Gallery. If you enjoyed this poetic lightning strike, why not show your appreciation by clicking on the 'Like' button at the bottom below. Alternatively, you could create a life-size model of Simon using plasticine and pipe cleaners and donate it to the local brass band to use as their mascot during the Christmas carol season. The choice is yours. Enjoy!]
And so it was, he longed to be
a shiny star for all to see
and aiming to complete this quest
he pushed himself through every test
All he met upon the path
seemed another chance to grasp
the all that he was longing for
it was not being sold at the store
But he felt with much conviction
by bringing tasks to completion
satisfaction would be his at last
all frustration in the past
But trying to do all things well
was, in fact, driving him into hell
and though he showed great skill and talent
it was growing more and more apparent
That doing was not helping much
it seemed something just out of touch
teased him, despite his efforts
despite his ways being oh so clever
He could not see there, in the mirror
the bubbling, magical, unique creature
he did not see there the eternal freedom
that had congealed and came to be him
for a blink in eternity
a temporary wave upon the sea
and no striving could change its destiny
that cycle of be, not be
and that that which he with such earnest sought
could by no efforts by found or bought
for it was always there from the start
before he tore the world apart
And remained, waiting there
unconcerned, despite apparent care
and when to silence the fury returned
all the lessons would be unlearned
The chains of being at last cut loose
to venture out, as they choose
and take a place in a new play
returning home, floating away.
