What are these little things that make you smile or weep?
Promises that nobody is ever going to keep,
A sovereign's head and some symbols printed on a paper note,
Or some numbers in a ledger that a money lender wrote.
What is this holy ghost that fills you full of fear?
Believing all the economic doom and gloom you hear.
'I promise to pay the bearer on demand' -
A promise never kept, and yet that promise rules the land.
What is this prison cell that doesn't have real walls?
Even though Wall Street is what illusion-spinners called
The castle where the fraud takes place, where false promises are made
And broken if e'er the bearers come expecting to be paid.
